| Melinda Braun was born in Racine, Wisconsin, grew up in Onalaska, Wisconsin, and began drawing as soon as she could hold a crayon. The first and only art contest she ever won was for a drawing of a puppy on a cloud in a Valentine card contest for third-graders. She received a check for twenty-five dollars—very big money for a seven year-old. Melinda kept on drawing and painting, never realizing that art could be anything other than a hobby that kept her from completing her algebra homework. Melinda graduated from Onalaska High School and went on to the University of Minnesota, majoring in psychology. After graduation, she started working for the MINITEX Library Information Network and decided to be a writer. She continued working while she went back school, and received an English degree in 2006. Currently, Melinda shares a house in south Minneapolis with her husband, Matt, and two spoiled cats, Junebug and Bee. (She has some pretty good stories about them, too!) Luella was inspired by a friend and co-worker who told Melinda her wonderful stories about a pet duck she got for her children when they were young. The charming book, written and beautifully illustrated by Melinda, is named for Luella, her great-grandmother, who always told her grandkids they could accomplish anything if they really tried. Melinda is glad she believed her. | ![]() |
